HDD Troubleshooting

Faults in HDD

1. Physical Faults

(i) Banded or broken out data pins

(ii) Dry Soldering on data ,Power and on logic card

(iii) Bad logic card or Controller Chip

(iv) Bad Sectors 

(v) Damaged media/ Old Media 

2. Logical Faults

(i) Deleted Partition or Unpartition  HDD

(ii) Virus infected Partition table 

(iii) Unformatted HDD or Format the Boot Partition 

(iv) Operating system  missing

Tools / Utility software use for HDD (Disk Utility)

1. NDD: Norton Disk Doctor it is utility software used for Check and fixes the Bad Sectors 

2. Scandisk :  It is disk utility command that is used for scanning and fix the HDD Faults 

3. Chkdsk:  It is also disk utility command that can check the faults in HDD

4. Disk Defragments: You might need to be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in order to perform some tasks.

Disk Defragmenter consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk, so that each occupies a single, contiguous space on the volume. As a result, your system can gain access to your files and folders and save new ones more efficiently. By consolidating your files and folders, Disk Defragmenter also consolidates the volume's free space, making it less likely that new files will be fragmented.

5. GHOST: It is utility software that is used to disk backup and restore backup. GHOST store the backup in the form of image.

Logical error messages 

1. System show the following error message 

“Invalid disk media “or Invalid System Disk”

Sol: 1.Check the HDD Drives it may not be Formatted 

2. Check the OS it may not be installed in HDD

3. If the OS is installed but error massage display than system or bootable files are missing

4. Recover the bootable files or reinstall the OS

2 System show the following error message

   “Error loading OS”

Sol: This error message shows because the HDD is not divided into partition.  Partition the HDD using any Partition tools, and format the drive and install the OS 

3 System show the following error message

“Disk Boot failure, Insert System Disk and Press Enter”

Sol: 1. First of all Check the HDD it may be detected or not in the system.

2. If the HDD is not detected in the system then Check:

(i) Power Cable & connector

(ii) Data Cable & connector

(iii) Jumper Setting

(iv) Check the Dry Soldering on Data & Power Connector

If the Problem is still than Logic Card of HDD is Bad Replace it

With Same Make and Model
